     ♦ [Эльза:] Эти чудовища сторожат нас. А мы ушли от них за тридевять земель (Шварц 2). [Е.:] Those monsters are watching us. But we managed to get a long, long way from them (2a).

     ♦ "И хотя бы ты был за тридевять земель, но жив, всё равно, невыносима эта мысль, что ты жив и всё знаешь, и меня судишь" (Достоевский 1). "And even if you had been in a faraway land, but still alive, the thought that you were alive and knew everything, and were judging me, would in any case have been unbearable" (1a).

     ♦ Конечно, это были смешные письма - хотя бы потому, что почти в каждом письме он сообщал, что ему "живётся всё хуже и хуже", как будто мы были за тридевять земель друг от друга (Каверин 1). Of course these were ridiculous letters, if only because in nearly every one he informed me that "his life grew worse and worse," as though we were miles apart (1a).
